H.R. 10243
Limits Social Security recovery of old-age overpayments
Stops Social Security from taking back old-age benefit overpayments caused by government mistakes made more than six months earlier, and caps monthly repayment cuts at 5 percent.
- No repayment required if the government's error caused the overpayment and it was found more than 6 months later
- Monthly Social Security checks could not be reduced by more than 5 percent to repay an overpayment
- The limits would not apply to anyone found to have committed fraud
- Applies to overpayments still owed on or after the law takes effect
