Limits how utilities use smart meter data
Bars state-regulated electric utilities from selling or sharing customers' smart meter data unless it is for billing, outages, grid reliability or similar uses, with the Federal Trade Commission enforcing.
- Utilities could use smart meter data only for billing, outages, grid reliability and similar purposes
- Each utility would report yearly to the Federal Trade Commission on what data it collected and shared
- A customer whose data was misused would get a bill credit of three times the utility's revenue from it
- State attorneys general could sue utilities for breaking the rules
