Fines hospitals up to $10,000 a day for unsafe care
Lets Medicare fine certain hospitals up to $10,000 for each day a serious safety problem continues, but only if the hospital had a similar safety finding in the past two years.
- Penalty can be up to $10,000 for each day the problem continues
- Only applies if the hospital had a similar safety finding in the past two years
- Nonprofit hospitals, including nonprofit critical access and rural emergency hospitals, are left out
- Findings must be posted on a public Medicare website
