H.R. 10691

Bans federal use of license plate readers

Stops federal agencies from using license plate readers unless Congress passes a law allowing it, cuts certain federal grants to states and cities that use them, and bars federal money from buying them.

  • Federal agencies could not use license plate readers unless Congress passes a law allowing it
  • States and local governments using the readers would lose certain federal grants
  • Federal money could not be used to buy, lease, or maintain the readers
  • Toll cameras could still be used, with plate data deleted after 48 hours
