Requires proof of citizenship to register to vote
Requires people to show documents proving U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, and directs states to remove people who are not citizens from voter lists.
- States cannot accept or process federal voter registration applications without documentary proof of U.S. citizenship
- Acceptable proof includes certain government ID, and states must offer another way to show other evidence
- States must check on an ongoing basis for people who are not U.S. citizens and remove them from voter rolls
- Election officials who register applicants without the required proof can face lawsuits and criminal penalties
