H.R. 9496
Extends tax deadlines for Americans detained abroad
Lets U.S. nationals held hostage or unlawfully or wrongfully detained abroad, and their spouses, file and pay taxes later and get back related taxes, interest, and penalties.
- Time spent detained does not count toward filing, paying, or refund deadlines
- Covers income, estate, gift, employment, and excise taxes
- The State and Justice Departments send the IRS yearly lists of who qualifies
- Refunds cover tax years ending during detention from 2021 through the bill's passage
