Pays for genealogy DNA testing in unsolved cases
Creates grants for state and local labs to use genetic genealogy to help identify suspects in unsolved crimes and unidentified human remains, with rules on how police may search genealogy services.
- $5 million a year would be set aside for each year from 2027 through 2031
- Grants go to states, police agencies, labs, prosecutors and coroner offices
- Labs must first check a national DNA database before doing genealogy searches
- Police may not arrest someone based only on a family-tree match
