S. 2498

Lets national park leases be extended without bidding

Allows the Interior Secretary to renew existing National Park System leases without putting them out for bid, while requiring public notice so others can express interest.

  • Lease must have run at least 5 years and the renter must be following its terms
  • A public notice of at least 60 days invites other groups to show interest in the lease
  • Extensions over 10 years and new leases over 60 years must be sent to Congress first
  • New leases for park property redevelopment costing over $100 million could run up to 99 years
